Thanks for the requests everyone!! Because of the volume of requests (over 20 so far), it will be easier if I just post the Bill of Materials and instructions here.
Bill of Materials:
1 can: PVC cement
4: 90 degree elbows – 1-1/2″ PVC
2: Tees – 1-1/2″ PVC
1: 10′ piece 1-1/2″ PVC
1:2′ piece 1-1/2″ PVC
You will also need a flat area to work, cover with plastic to protect floor from PVC cement.
Cut and deburr the pieces (use knife edge to scrape cut to remove burr, then sand paper to roughen up end) as follows:
From the 10′ piece: cut 4 pieces 17″ long. These are the upright arms. Cut 4 pieces 11-3/4″ long. These are the bottom base pieces. From the 2′ piece, cut one piece 15-1/2″ long. This is the cross bar.
If you look at the elbows and tees, you will see an obvious seam, plus marks around the flange end to indicate angles. Plumbers uses these marks to properly line up parts when assembling household drain lines. The pipe itself also usually has a line running down it which can be used to line up with the marks and seams.
Apply cement to both one end of each of one arm and one base piece and the inside of one 90 degree elbow. Push the arm and base piece into the elbow and twist to line up the line on the tube with the index mark on the elbow. Set aside, then repeat 3 more times.
Apply cement to both ends of the cross bar and the cross piece of the tee. Push the cross bar into the tees and give a slight twist, then lay the assembly down on the floor and align the tees.
Apply cement to the arm/base assembly (be sure to only apply cement to the base tube!) and the end of one of the tees. Insert base tube and slightly twist then align the index mark so the arm is vertical. Repeat 3 more times with the remaining assemblies. Eyeball the 4 assemblies and be sure that they are straight up and down. You have about 3-5 minutes before the cement sets up to make final adjustments.
Allow the unit to dry for at least 3 hours before use.
I used this hammock from PetSmart: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753372&cp=&sr=1&origkw=hammock&kw=hammock&parentPage=search&keepsr=1
The hammock has clips on each of the 4 corners that will slip over the ends of the upright arms.
Don’t be surprised it it takes a few days before the cats find the hammock and start to use it, but it will soon become a favorite place to take a nap, especially if it sits in the sun!
